Tired of the "religious
right" claiming to be the only faithful ones out
there?
Throughout this
website I have posted articles -- even entire
sections -- that take on the phoniness of the
"religious right," George Bush's shallow "faith,"
and other empty shells of religious faith
masquerading as true faith and spirituality.
As I read my comments about the "religious right"
and their hypocrisy, and as I read my comments
about the phony "faith" of George Bush, I am
struck by my own negative attitude and by how my
own attacks on the "religious right" mirror their
attacks on the rest of us. In fact, I am a
Christian man and have a very spiritual side.
I need to stop
being so negative. As a counter to the
"religious right" it is important that we examine
true religious faith and true spiritual depth.
Below are links to websites, books, and references
that have given me comfort and spiritual succor.
Try these -- you'll find the real meaning of
"faith" -- and it's not what the "religious right"
would have you believe.
-
Sojourners is an organization
founded on the belief that we are all seeking
a faith that guides our lives. Jim
Wallis, founder of Sojourners,
maintains this website and publishes a superb
magazine that covers faith, politics, and
culture. Jim is an evangelical -- he is
also a leading figure at the crossroads of
religion and politics in America. Visit
their website, subscribe to the
magazine, Sojourner, and read
Jim's book
God's Politics: Why the Right Gets It
Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get It.
- All too often when someone from the
"religious right" tells us that "It's
scriptural" it turns out that what they
claim is based on the Bible is not.
For an excellent study of what the Bible is
and is not and what the Bible does and does
not say, I recommend
The Good Book:
Reading the Bible with Heart and Mind, by
Peter J. Gomes, chaplain of Harvard University.
- More to come. If you have a
favorite book, website, or publication that
has meant a lot to you spiritually,
please
e-mail
the details to me. Thanks.
